Flanked by Interstate 277 and 77, Uptown Charlotte is surrounded by the neighborhoods of Elizabeth, North Davidson (NoDa), Plaza Midwood, and SouthEnd.

The area is divided into four wards, which were originally designated as voting areas in the mid-1830s. Over the decades, each ward came to develop its own history and identity:

  • First Ward – This is a primarily residential area. Along with the Fourth Ward, it is considered to be one of the most pedestrian-friendly wards in Uptown Charlotte. Located east of the intersection of Trade and Tryon streets, this quadrant is bordered by North Tryon, East Trade, and the I-277 urban loop highway. The housing stock was almost entirely made up of public housing for many decades before the ward redeveloped as a mixed-income neighborhood. History

The area that makes up present-day Uptown was part of a Native American trading path that stretched from Georgia to the Virginia coast. Trade and Tryon streets lie on the junction of the original Native American paths and became the site of the village settlement 1753. It was initially incorporated as Charlotte Town in 1768.

Trade and Tryon streets served as the main arteries with the intersection at Independence Square, close to the center of the grid. The first hundred acres of blocks were laid out around this square and expanded to about 220 blocks by 1855.

In the 1850s, the local government split the grid into the Four Wards, each a distinct political ward with an elected representative, for voting purposes. The boundary lines were drawn down the middle of Trade and Tryon streets. The outer boundaries of the quadrants increased in population, with seven suburban wards having grown around the old village by 1907.

The commercial core of the village expanded with the arrival of the electric trolley system in 1891. It was around this time that the newspapers like Charlotte Observer began referring to the area as Uptown, though locals and city leaders continued to call it Downtown until the mid-1970s.

In 1973, businessman Jack Wood launched a campaign to name it Uptown to rebrand the downtown area as an upscale destination for residents and businesses. The following year, the Charlotte City Council passed an official proclamation naming it Uptown.

Getting Around

Most places in Uptown are highly walkable and bike-friendly, though many residents and visitors travel into the city by car. It’s fairly easy to find parking with many surface lots along the edges of Center City and structured parking closer to the center. The largest artery, I-77, connects to I-277 to form a loop around Center City along with NC Highway 74.

The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) operates a central bus terminal across Trade Street from the Bobcats Arena while the city’s own Greyhound bus station is right on Trade Street. LYNX Blue Line connects Uptown by light rail service to SouthEnd and other neighborhoods to the southwest as well as UNC-Charlotte to the north.
